Beware: 2013 is a significant downgrade

I've purchased several copies of the Not For Tourists guidebook for NYC before, and they've always been handy.
Not so with the 2013 edition. It's quite a bit smaller than the editions before it (336 pages for 2013, vs. 432 for 2012, and 486 for 2010 — the most recent editions I own). They accomplished this by removing all but a single map for each section of Manhattan (vs. the four categories of "Essentials", "Sundries", "Entertainment", and "Transportation" that older editions sported), deleting entire categories of venues (such as liquor stores, farmers' markets, hardware stores, and car rentals), and ripping out roughly 40% of the back content (regarding parks, museums, and the like).
Not For Tourists ironically reads more like a tourist guide than ever.

Believe the title

This guide is truly not for tourists, but for people who are thinking of moving to New York City and want to learn the neighborhoods - or new residents getting oriented. On the other hand, a tourist can definitely find good things in it.
The individual neighborhood maps are excellent - a feature both tourists and residents will find useful - and the neighborhood overviews nicely sum up the cultural and architectural flavor of each distinct area of the city.
Places to eat, shop and revel are organized by neighborhoods. Lots of restaurants and bars are listed, with pithy, witty write-ups. No in-depth descriptions, but the one-liners say a lot.
Museums and other major tourist attractions are listed, but so are butchers, cheese shops, supermarkets, gyms, laundromats, plumbers, and afterschool programs for kids. So you see, lots of content is not about tourism. The information on transit systems is extensive. Parks and sports venues get considerable coverage. And there are informative write-ups on the boroughs.
If you're just breezing through the city on a holiday, this may not be the best guidebook for you. On the other hand, if you're spending a long vacation and plan to live like a native, this may be just what you're looking for.
The small size of this book is a great advantage. It drops easily into a woman's handbag or a man's jacket pocket.
I'd rank NFT New York City as a four-star book for tourists, but probably a five-star book for new residents. If you're a true tourist, I'd suggest using this book as a supplement to a more comprehensive, tourism-oriented guidebook.

Note: tiny font makes reading a challenge

As other reviewers have noted, the book is very compact. The font is tiny - I did not measure it, but it seemed to be 6 point or even less; small enough that I could not read it without assistance, and I do not generally need reading glasses.
