Once shorn of metaphysical commitments and detached from aspirations to consensus, political liberalism offers a contingent and historically viable framework within which agonistic contestation can occur. Such a reinterpretation of Rawls produces not the sublimation of agonism but a transformation of liberalism, so that it more adequately accommodates the deep pluralism of the post-foundational condition.

About the Author
Ed Wingenbach is Interim Associate Vice-President of Academic Affairs at the University of Redlands, USA. His research interests include contemporary political theory, democratic theory, Heidegger, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has published articles and chapters on a range of topics in some of the top journals in his fields, including the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, and International Philosophical Quarterly. He has received repeated recognition for excellence in his teaching, including awards at Notre Dame and the University of South Carolina, and a nomination for Professor of the Year at the University of Redlands. In 2006 he received the University of Redlands Award for Outstanding Service.

One of the best I've read!

Ive been a boxing fan for over 45 years and this is one of the very best books on the sport Ive had the honor of reading! Heavyweight Boxing In The 1970's goes into great detail about the fights and the fighters that made the 1970s the greatest decade for not only heavyweight boxing , but for the sport in general! Though at first,I did'nt like the fact that the book had no pictures,but that became a moot point once I began reading! The details of little publicized or forgotten fights are covered in great depth! This is not only about the 70's heavyweight scene but every decade from the 1900's to the era of the klitschko brothers! I highly recommend this fantastic book!

Great Boxing Book

Heavyweight Boxing in the 1970s by Joe Ryan is another gem from the McFarland Publishing stable. If you are a boxing fan, there is no way you want to miss this great source of pugilistic history.

Ryan makes a case that the 1970s provided the greatest era for heavyweights in the history of the sport, and I agree with him. The book compares the other eras, the champions and challengers, and makes argument for why the 70s, loaded with fighters like Ali, Frazier, Foreman, and Norton (not to mention Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shavers, Larry Holmes, etc.) was the high water mark for heavyweight boxing.

For me, this book was a walk down memory lane, as I had seen or at least read about many of these fights way back when. I appreciate the insight that Ryan provided on many of the big fights, the politics behind decisions on where some of the fights were to be held, and the personalities of the boxers.

While the sport has always had controversy and corruption, there is a special pull when you are reading about these larger than life stars like Ali and Foreman. If you are a sports fan, and especially an appreciator of the squared circle, this book is definitely worth your time.

The 70's Boxing Historian

The author has compiled a very interesting, compelling, and readable history of the 1970's heavyweights. Considered by many to be the single greatest decade of heavyweights ever, this book on the heavies of the 1970's will instruct, provide insight, and bring back so many great memories of all the epic fights of that decade. While the very best fights are more detailed, the author also covers the important secondary fights, and even gives consideration to the "bums" who were stepping stones for the more talented in the division. The book begins with an excellent summary of the decades of boxing beginning in the Jack Johnson era to present, and then gets down to his favorite subject, the exciting 1970's. As someone who considers himself knowledgeable of that boxing decade, I learned so much from this book, details about fights, personalities, promoters, wives, etc. that it was well worth my time; in fact, I truly enjoyed every page of this excellent book. I had considered selling this book after reading it, but it is so good that I want it to be a part of my boxing library as the definitive source of the 1970's heavyweight division.

If you are a boxing fan, you will like this book. If you are a boxing fan who grew up in this era, you will love this book.

I loved this book. It was very informative about the history, current situation, and laws regarding pot, and done in a very readable and exciting way. Ryan Nerz is a very good writer and his involvement in the shady California pot growing community, which grows and sells for legal medical purposes and illegal recreational purposes, was beyond exciting. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the "drug war" in this country, regardless of your feelings about it. It just might change your mind.

It integrates this study of the films with a documented narrative of his relationship to the Party, its history and conflicts, its duplicities--especially the relations of the Party and its followers to the oppressions of the Soviet Union. And so it challenges the validity of the conventional wisdom about the moral issues of the blacklist period.

Limited utility

This slim volume covers a few areas of image-processing. Some areas are covered nicely, while others are considerably weaker.

Harold Davis excels with his backlit images of flowers which have all the delicacy of water color. His technique (he calls it 'hand hdr') of combining multiple exposures is covered in detail. He also describes his unusual compositing techniques, which have given him strange and beautiful images. He enjoins the reader to experiment with different color spaces, particularly Lab Color. Virtually all of his transformations are accomplished without the filters (pastel, gesso, brushstrokes, etc) used by first-timers. This is all valuable information.

Where I feel that Davis falls short is in his actual use of Photoshop. While his techniques work, they barely touch on more recent developments in PS. For example, Davis recommends layering varied conversions of the same RAW file. But he doesn't touch on the subject of smart layers, which both simplify this process and confer greater flexibility. Nor is there any mention of adjustment layers, which I believe would accomplish many of his effects with less fuss. Much of his compositing (I'm thinking particularly of his Escher-like staircases) would be much easier with the new puppet warp feature. He also uses a brush to paint over many problem areas; while he's good at it, it's devilishly difficult to do and shows too little faith in judicious use of the new context-sensitive features of CS5. The section on glamour retouching should have been excluded. Many of the problems could have been eliminated by more careful studio lighting. Most of the remaining touch-up looks artificial. All in all, it feels like Davis's knowledge of Photoshop has not been refreshed in quite some time.

For an overall sense of good PS workflow, I still feel that the books of Martin Evening are in a league of their own. Once the user has an up-to-date feel for the program, there are still some nice tidbits in this book.

A different kind of Photoshop book

Photoshop is a mature product, having been around for a couple of decades. It is huge in terms of the number of features, and the book market for teaching people how to use it has evolved accordingly. At first there were only "Bible" books that attempted to teach you everything. More recently there have been books that are more topical, teaching you specific kinds of skills, like color adjustment, or digital collage, or painting. I haven't seen a book of this sort before - mainly because I have not read it's predecessor, The Photoshop Darkroom: Creative Digital Post-Processing.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Just looking at the cover, then flipping through the pages, one cannot help but be astonished at the lively, colorful, attractive pictures. The usual flowers, pictures of women's faces, spiral staircases, but with unusual treatments. "How did he DO that?" is a question that keeps coming up as I browse the book.

HOW HE DOES IT

The best part of this book, and what sets it apart from others, is he takes you through multi-step processes of using a variety of different techniques to create a unique image. Other books will typically show you how to use one technique, and the result. That's very helpful, as far as it goes, but the real power of Photoshop is combining these techniques. Going through a process of combining the techniques gets you to think about planning the result and how to get there.

The book is organized as a series of separate projects. Each project has the steps, including original pictures, and interim steps along the way. He explains what he is doing, and why. it's a little like seeing a demonstration.

SIDEBARS AND CASE STUDIES

Scattered among these lessons you will find additional lessons in boxes to teach you other morsels of information, sometimes directly relevant, sometimes a bit tangential to the subject at hand.

BOTTOM LINE

I love this book. That means five stars. Yes, as an Amazon Vine reviewer, the reviewer copy was provided for me, but for sure I will be buying the first and third, and reading them all, and trying to reproduce the results with similar photos.

Great Post-Production Guide That Happens to Use Photoshop

More and more I'm liking these types of books that concentrate on post-production of an image, where the tool of choice just happens to be Photoshop. This is NOT a Photoshop step-by-step book and it's not meant to be. This book is intended for that photographer or editor that has their feet wet with Photoshop and understands the standard tools and functions, and is saying to themselves, "OK, I know what layers are and blending modes and how to use selection tools and Levels, etc, but how do I BEST use this Adobe tool to create a solid post-production workflow?". If you're there, this is your book. Have a look at the preview, especially the Table of Contents and you'll see what is covered. It's about 200 pages long and covers roughly 60 techniques, there aren't really any long chapters. I personally like that format, you hit each sep one at a time. But with that there are "post-it notes" and other inserted notes on the pages where the authors give a short but important "why you're doing this" tip. I really like this book, even as a seasoned pro I'll be keeping this handy with tabs on the best pages as a guidebook/workbook. I wish something like this was out 5 years ago!
