The big-label relaunch of the once–self-published Syncopated anthologies (a New Yorker for the comics set) is a uniformly classy affair with only a few slow moments. As the title suggests, the book collects meaty article presented as comics. Series editor and curator Burford contributes two pieces, one of which might be the book's high point: a study of the life of Boris Rose, who built probably the world's largest collection of live jazz recordings, still locked in storage and most of it never heard by anyone but Rose himself. Alex Holden provides an amazing bit of picto-journalism in West Side Improvements, the story of Manhattan's riverside train tracks and the vibrant graffiti culture that grew in their tunnels. Nick Bertozzi's How and Why to Bale Hay is a somewhat traditional graphical memoir; Greg Cook's What We So Quietly Saw is anything but traditional, using only silhouettes to tell selected stories from inside Guantánamo Bay. Only Dave Kiersh's Welcome Home, Brave fails to fully satisfy, due to a flat narrative. An elegant and smart volume, well worth the space on the collector's shelf. (May)

Paul Karasik (The Ride Together, 2003), Nate Powell (Swallow Me Whole, 2008), Jim Campbell, and Josh Neufeld (A Few Perfect Hours, 2004) are some better-known contributors to this informed and informative smorgasbord that includes expositions on the graffiti-muraled Freedom Tunnel under New York’s Riverside Park, a rapid but engaging bio of psychological theorist Erik Erikson, a transcript from Guantánamo’s interrogation chambers, the adoption process of a Chinese girl, the 1921 Tulsa race riot, and sketches of subway buskers. All in black and white, the various visual styles present washes, full-page pen sketches, densely shadowed cartoons, and grids of as many as nine panels per page. Intelligent exploration of the topics, traditional and more experimental imagery, and the wide compass of subjects and art manners make this recommendable to literature and art readers alike. Marvelous

His day job has nothing on "Syncopation." By day, Brendan Burford is a normal, overworked, underpaid editor at King Features, and once night falls, his editorial senses awaken and the tick, tock of his office clock syncopates in creative rhythym...

At first glance, "Syncopated" is just another collection of newly popular illustrated fiction. For years, comic books, comic strips, and Europe appreciated and fed the art form. Today, it is different. With Harvey Pekar receiving incredulous acclaim from 'experts', the market and doors have opened. Having read Pekar's work, I appreciate very little of it, and "Syncopated" is far superior. Burford has gathered 16 picto essays and the topics discussed range from baling hay (and a new appreciation of it) to the story of the Dvorak keyboard. Inbetween, are delightful tales that might appear on "The Rest of the Story" or in Readers Digest. The storytelling ranges form standard 3 x 3 panels to full page panels, and yet few of the artists would be deemed mainstream.

You will not cry. You may laugh. Once you read this, you will put it down, and realize that Mr Burford has outdone Pekar, and thus, "Syncopated" becomes a victory celebration.

Stuff Worth Knowing

Great comics impress with their artwork and pithy writing and this collection is no exception, with cartoonists like Rina Piccolo, Nate Powell and Brendan Burford getting to stretch their creative legs across the pages.

But the most impressive part of the "picto-essays" is that they leave you with something to think about, long after you have finished reading (which, in my case, was at two minutes to midnight, having devoured the book in one sitting).

Because of this, I'm off to wikipedia to research the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921, I'll be delving into my computer to see how I can switch to the Dvorak way of typing and I'll never see hay bales in the same way again.

John Paul I biographer George Lucien Gregoire was born in New England and completed his undergraduate and graduate work in Massachusetts schools. In connection with his work in cooperative education and as founder of organizations bringing education to impaired children he has served on boards of universities and secondary schools. He spent his professional career as an officer of American and European corporations and was an American industrialist operating in Central America dealing with the same banks the Vatican was involved with when the 'Vatican bank scandal' and the 'revolution of the poor' he speaks of in this book took place. Gregoire was a NATO (CIA) Intelligence officer when he made the acquaintance of John Paul in the sixties when the Pope-a bishop of a mountain province in northern Italy-was leading the priest-worker movement which eventually gave rise to the Communist Party in the polls . . . About John Paul I: When elected-based on the few bits which had reached outside Italy-he was tabbed 'a moderate with an open mind to change doctrine in those cases it places unfair restraints on the lives of innocent people.' An Open Letter to the Author

Dear Mr. Gregoire,

This is the third version of this book I have read. Before this, I read "White Light, Dark Night (2007)" and "Murder in the Vatican (2010)".

My comments here are not complete, but will express some ideas not yet stated by other reviewers.

*** This book is very well written. Even if a real cynic were to view this as a fictional piece, it flows very well, and ties together seemly disparate topics.

*** It's fairly easy to determine what is your opinion, and what has been researched and documented. There are way too many footnotes and references for anyone to dismiss this book out of hand --- unless, of course, if one has never read it.

*** While I understand a previous reviewer's point about making this two separate books, I respectfully disagree. The picture that emerges of Albino Luciani / Pope John Paul I, in the biographical chapters, makes the portions detailing deceptions and cover-ups by others that much more powerful and tragic.

*** Your treatment of Paul Marcinkus is unique; it's more even-handed, and detailing "shades of grey", than other writers who dismiss the late archbishop as "The Gorilla". When will you be able to reveal what he told you about why he lived in seclusion in Sun City, Arizona?

*** My quibbles: I would have liked to have seen the chapter of Cardinal Luciani's trip to Egypt from your 2007 book left in its entirety in this one. Also, the "euro-communism versus Republican/capitalism" theme appears a little simplistic and overdone. While Karol Wojtyla / John Paul II had far different views from his predecessor in many respects, he was quoted several times in speeches made from his Latin American tours he was not a big fan of capitalism, despite what he thought of communism.

What I take away from this book is the Church is made of the people --- ALL of the people --- and not of self-preserving Curia members, mobsters, or other criminals. Sometimes, it takes a special individual (Albino Luciani) to remind us of that, even if only for a moment.

Highly recommended for those able to think critically

A look into the interconnections between multiple institutional fascist elements in the world, and the violence they support in attempts to maintain their control. Having read many thousands of pages of histories related to these events, the material on the vatican assassinations and the politics of pontiffs was quite illuminating. Highly recommended for those able to think critically.

Great Author

Murder by the Grace of God is an impressive book to read and well written. I have already recommended this book to my fellow co-wokers. its a book that you can't put down. I take it to work every day to read on my breaks, in fact one of my co-workers was reading it this monring. The Author is Brilliant , love this book. but when reading it, you must take your time to Inhale all the information that the book Contains.

About the Author
Bruce Block has worked in a creative capacity on dozens of feature films, television shows commercials and animated films. His feature film producing credits include Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, America's Sweethearts, The Parent Trap, and Father of the Bride I & II. He served as creative consultant on Spanglish, As Good As It Gets, Stuart Little and many other feature films and television productions. He is an adjunct Professor at the USC School of Cinema & Television and teaches classes in visual structure at the American Film Institute, PIXAR Studios, Walt Disney Feature and Television Animation, Dreamworks Animation, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Industrial Light & Magic and a variety of film schools in Europe. A Unique, Must-Have Book for Filmmakers

I teach a class called "Story" at Los Angeles Film School and this book is on my Recommend Reading List for all students but I especially tout it to cinematography, production design and directing majors. There are many books that talk about the basics (shot size, 180 degree rule, etc.) but if you want to go beyond that to find out what kinds of choices the great filmmakers make and why, this is the book with the answers.

One thing young filmmakers and students often fail to understand about the auteurs and master directors is that they base their shots on what serves the story, not the fact that the shot "looks cool." I love the fact that author Bruce Block talks so much about the need for the visuals to follow and reflect the ups and downs of the underlying story structure. I also love the fact that that he takes film theory and shows the filmmaker how to apply it. Ordinarily, film theory and film practice are two separate worlds.

I never thought I'd find a film book I liked better than the first edition of "The Visual Story," but now I have: It's the 2nd edition, which has a bigger, easier-to-read format, many more color illustrations and more, updated examples. The students who've taken my advice and read this book are blown away by it. I believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone who is in the film business or who hopes to be.

It has changed the way I handle preproduction for life!

The subjects covered in this book are CRITICAL to all artist, Photographers, Painters, Game Designers, and Videographers. We must have a good grasp of fundamental principles concerning visual structure.

The Visual Story by Bruce Block reads a lot like a textbook. Since I prefer a book to come across as if hearing some guru on the subject teach me, this is a con. That being said, it is an excellent textbook. In the early chapters it sets stages for fundamentals like Contrast/Affinity and Space for example. Then, throughout the book it constantly refers to these pillars of visual design giving real world examples.

Which brings me to my next point, the examples this book gives are superb. Bruce Block will cover a subject, like TONE, for an entire chapter and at the end he will bring the lesson full circle by giving you `films to watch.' But wait! The films that Bruce recommends vary extensively! In the TONE chapter, `films to watch' include the movies T-Men (1947) and Kill Bill (2003) [plus a handful more]. Using this layout, Bruce is able to convey that the subject matter for each chapter is TIMELESS! His example movies transcend not only time released, but also subject matter and themes.

This book really shines with its illustrations. An absolute ideal amount of visual aids are delightfully displayed throughout the book. Not too many, not too few. Even the graphs (which typically aren't the most exciting graphical element) had a proper layout. I seem to remember running across somewhere that the first edition of this book was all black and white, wow. GREAT move going to full color, I can honestly say that this book would have not been nearly as impacting. I do have a problem with the cover art though, it's a small gripe but I always use my hands to frame a picture in widescreen (thumbs to index fingers). That is very nitpicky but the cover to a book is pretty critical, and since it aced the illustrations in the book, I wanted to mention it.

Early in the book it can seem a bit drawn out and basic. I would encourage readers to not skip the beginning chapters as they are constantly referenced throughout the book. Even if you feel you have a fantastic grip on the subject matter, it never hurts to review.

The appendix is very detailed and honestly, it feels like these were sections of chapters pulled out to keep the pace up a little. Regardless, this section is full of info that needs to be read.

Chapter Nine is Story and Visual Structure. I have a post-it note sticking out of this with "fantastic chapter" written on it. Seriously, this graph filled chapter will change the way I look at all productions and will effect my planning and execution for the rest of my professional career.

I was going to give The Visual Story 4.5 out of 5 stars but realized the impact this book has on my future work and decided it deserves my highest recommendation. Full 5 stars for Bruce Block. It may feel a bit `text-booky' but it has certainly changed my work process.

Bravo Bruce this Monkey feels more like a Ninja. Monkey Butler Ninja gives The Visual Story 5 out of 5 ninja stars and a banana tree!

Terrific Tool - for the visual and language learner!

I am a visual person. I'm currently taking a film class and had to purchase The Visual Story for class. Let me first say that I am an aspiring filmmaker. I have an incredible library of handpicked books catering to any and all aspects of the filmmaking experience and this is by FAR among the very top of my selections! It is really terrific at not only explaining concepts very concisely, but it also is full of real visual examples. Terrific book. Buy it! You'll be glad you did.
