This book re-evaluates a rich scientific heritage of space- and history-sensitive development theories and produces an integrated methodology for the comparative analysis of urban and regional trajectories within a globalized world. The main argument put forward is that current mainstream analyses of urban and regional development have forgotten this rich heritage and fail to address the connections between different dimensions of development, the role of history and the importance of place and scale relations.

The proposed methodology integrates elements from different theories – radical economic geography, regulation approach, cultural political economy, old and new institutionalism – that all share a strong concern with time and space dynamics. They are recombined into an interdisciplinary (meta)theoretical framework, capable of articulating the overall problem of socio-economic development and providing methodological anchors for comparative case-study analysis, while recognizing context specificities. The analytical methodology focuses on key dynamics and relations, such as strategic agency and collective action, institutions and structures, culture and discourse, as well as the tension between path-dependency and path-shaping.

The methodology is then applied to eight urban and regional cases, mostly from Western Europe, but also from the United States and China. The case studies confirm the relevance of time- and space-sensitive analysis, not only for understanding development trajectories, but also for policy making. They ultimately highlight that, while post-war institutions were able to address systemic contradictions and foster a relatively inclusive development model, the neoliberal turn has led to reductionist policies that not only have resulted in an increase in social and spatial inequalities, but have also undermined growth and democracy.

Flavia Martinelli is Professor of Analysis of Territorial Systems in the School of Architecture at the University ‘Mediterranea’ of Reggio Calabria, Italy. Her research interests include regional development dynamics, inequalities and cohesion policies, with a focus on services and the Mezzogiorno.

Frank Moulaert is Professor of Spatial Planning and Head of the Planning and Development Unit ASRO at KU Leuven, Belgium. He specialises in research on social innovation and spatial development.

Andreas Novy is Professor of Development Studies at the Institute for the Environment and Regional Development of WU, the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria. He works on development and planning, social movements and governance, and transdisciplinary research.

In The Dance That Makes You Vanish, an examination of the relationship between female dancers and the Indonesian state since 1965, Rachmi Diyah Larasati elucidates the Suharto regime’s dual-edged strategy: persecuting and killing performers perceived as communist or left leaning while simultaneously producing and deploying “replicas”—new bodies trained to standardize and unify the “unruly” movements and voices of those vanished—as idealized representatives of Indonesia’s cultural elegance and composure in bowing to autocratic rule. Analyzing this history, Larasati shows how the Suharto regime’s obsessive attempts to control and harness Indonesian dance for its own political ends have functioned as both smoke screen and smoke signal, inadvertently drawing attention to the site of state violence and criminality by constantly pointing out the “perfection” of the mask that covers it.

Reflecting on her own experiences as an Indonesian national troupe dancer from a family of persecuted female dancers and activists, Larasati brings to life a powerful, multifaceted investigation of the pervasive use of culture as a vehicle for state repression and the global mass-marketing of national identity.

About the Author

Rachmi Diyah Larasati is assistant professor of cultural theory, critical studies, and dance history in the department of Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota. She also holds an affiliate graduate faculty position there in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and is a former guest faculty at the Brown University Critical Global Humanities Research Institute.

Good Biography of a Great Boxer

In Joe Louis: The Life of a Heavyweight, author Lew Freedman takes the reader on a journey throughout the great boxer's entire life, from his humble beginnings in rural Alabama to his death in a Las Vegas hotel room. Freedman discusses aspects of Louis' life and career in the right amount of detail--enough to be informative, but not so much so as to lose the reader's interest. Likewise, although Freedman is a veteran sports reporter, he takes the time to explain the ins and outs of boxing, as well as to provide mini-biographies of the men Louis took on in the ring. (Max Schmeling was by far the most interesting of these characters.) This helped me, a boxing abecedarian, gain a better understanding of and appreciation for the sport. In addition, the book provides a very good description of what it was like to be a black man fighting for the heavyweight crown in a white man's world.

Overall, I did think this was a good book. Freedman's writing style was perhaps the biggest drawback to the book--in places, it just didn't "click" for me (e.g., using a phrase in a way that didn't make sense as I was reading it), and it felt like a long magazine article, not necessarily a book. And if I were Freedman, the one change I would have made would have been to provide web links (or perhaps set up a webpage to go along with the book) of actual Joe Louis fight footage. I watched some Louis videos on YouTube, and it helped me to understand the book's fight descriptions much better.

ANTHONY FEINSTEIN grew up in Greenside, Johannesburg, and obtained his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. After studying the violin in Paris he returned to the country in 1982 for his two-year military service. Feinstein subsequently trained as a psychiatrist in England where he completed his PhD at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and currently professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto in Canada. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. His most recent book is the Clinical Neuropsychiatry of Multiple Sclerosis (Cambridge University Press).

Lee Kuan Yew is a man that I wish China and Hong Kong has somebody like him! He is such an intelligent and
understandng man that when he wants to accomplish somthing, he anticipates and prepares for many steps ahead.
For example, the way he handles the multiracial issue and the unifying by promoting all the different dialects and different languages with the official language being English and the second language of each individual's choice was
one of the many basic fundamentals that had helped tremendously in that environment. His basic fair minded principle behind his every move for the nation and his understanding of the different cultures and traditions of all the various racial communities and how it should be adopted in the modern society taking the good principle from each and discarding the unsuitables and the priorities he placed on what is necessary is really admirable!

All in all, I am a great admirer of this great man.
