Gorgeous edition of the classic text, crammed with goodies

Note: For some reason, the Kindle edition is different from the version I reviewed. The version I reviewed is a hardback and it is not introduced by a creationist. Please be very careful in considering editions of this book, as there are many.

This edition of "On the Origin of Species" is invaluable to anyone who has been suffering without Darwin's most important work, or getting by with only a stripped-down version. The text is the first edition of the six editions Darwin oversaw in his lifetime. It's the version scientists now regard as the most powerful and passionate statement of Darwin's views. But besides the full (unabridged) "Origin," this large-format book is replete with other materials. The word "sumptuous" comes to mind. There are hundreds of amazing illustrations, maps and diagrams, many in full color. Also included are scores of substantial excerpts from other works by Darwin and correspondence between him and his contemporaries. This makes the book a treasure to have, because it is so incredibly rich in contextual materials.

For instance, pictures of T.H. Huxley are included along with Huxley's letter to Darwin, where Huxley asserted his (not altogether unconditional) support for Darwin's argument and added that he was sharpening his claws and beak in readiness - that is, to help defend Darwin from his opponents. I was also delighted with the many beautiful photographs taken in the Galapagos Islands and of life forms found there, to say nothing of the pictures of Darwin, his family, colleagues and adversaries that are interspersed throughout the book, and Darwin's own drawings, the pictures of Darwin's home near Downe, his desk, models and a detailed diagram of the H.M.S. Beagle, and so on. There is also a chronology of Darwin's life to 1864. Reading this, you are getting far more than one book: the many excerpts from Darwin's earlier and later writings, and all the illustrations and other materials, provide considerable historical context for the "Origin," its development and reception, making this almost certainly the definitive edition.

If you have never read Darwin's masterpiece, this book is a first-class reason to do so. His prose is elegant - even, at times, eloquent. The argument unfolds logically and clearly. Darwin was an utterly unpretentious English gentleman, after all, who lived during the Victorian era; he was, and remains, a highly agreeable companion. (If you enjoy travel literature, Darwin's earlier "Voyage of the Beagle" is also highly readable and fascinating. It sold well in his lifetime and reads almost like an adventure story. Many excerpts from "Voyage" appear in the book under review. They may tempt you to read the other book - "Voyage of the Beagle," that is.) "On the Origin of Species" was written to be read by anyone - it is not merely for scientists or experts. Small wonder that the first edition sold out the same day it was released.

One of the most striking things about the "Origin" is how careful, even cautious, Darwin is in drawing inferences from the piles of data he had before him. (In fact, he devoted an entire chapter to describing potential objections to his own arguments. That takes candor to a very high level. Yet creationists often just read that chapter in order to find objections to evolution, as if Darwin had not already thought the matter through, and as if modern science had not already resolved those objections, since Darwin so thoughtfully and disarmingly enumerated them.) Darwin's argument thus has more force than it would if he made claims that the data did not so clearly support. Darwin's great virtue as a scientist is that he did not let his own beliefs prejudice his investigations: he let the evidence speak plainly for itself. He was humble, painstaking and forthright.

Since I originally prepared this review, another superb edition of "On the Origin of Species" has been published by Harvard's Belknap Press, which provides excellent and substantial annotations to a facsimile of the original 1859 text, on the same pages as the text itself. That is a handsome volume which is immensely helpful because the annotations (prepared by James T. Costa, a biologist himself) explain so much. Darwin's writing is precise and clear but lay readers often have questions - or would, if we knew what to ask - that are answered in the annotations. Professor Costa updates much of what is being said in the text with current scientific knowledge, explains why Darwin is saying what he is saying, and generally offers valuable insights. The result is to make Darwin's book even more accessible to the general reader. Regrettably, that volume does not have all the rich contextual materials, illustrations and selections from other works that distinguish the edition under review here. Still, if your objective is to read Darwin's seminal work and comprehend it, Costa's is doubtless as good a book as there is. Thus, while it would be ideal if both of these books could be combined, we should be vastly grateful that two such outstanding editions of this important work became available at reasonable cost during the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of "On the Origin of Species." You can take your pick, or if you really love Darwin and science, get both (as I did).

While I recommend reading "On the Origin of Species" in any edition, this is a lavish and eminently worthwhile volume, which I have added to the several editions I already own.

This is the sixth edition of the Origin of Species

My four-star rating is more for this particular product than for the work of Darwin itself. Clearly Darwin's book is the cornerstone of modern biology, and I won't even pretend to try to rate its importance using one to five stars.

However, I felt it was important to let people know that this is the *sixth* edition of the book. I ordered it thinking it was the first, although I admit I had no reason to believe that other than that it did not specify that it was any other edition. The main problem with later editions is that Darwin continually responded to his critics in subsequent editions, thus changing some aspects of his theory. He also added the obnoxious concession "by the Creator" to his beautiful final sentence in order to appease the religious critics. The sixth (final) edition even has an extra chapter in response to criticisms by Catholic biologist George Mivart (which chapter is present in this edition, thus proving it is the sixth edition).

The benefit to later editions would be that they contain minor corrections to the writing, as well as these answers to objections and criticism, but at the same time I don't feel that Darwin's answers needed to be added to the book itself. "The Origin" should simply present his theory (as the first edition does) and he could easily have answered his critics in other ways and not by editing the actual theory itself.

But to reiterate my main point, I am not reviewing the actual work of Darwin. I am posting this review to inform people of which edition they are getting with this particular book, because I wish I had known in advance.

Edit: I should add that the copy I received did not have the same cover as what is displayed here. My copy shows a bird, a wildcat, and a dolphin on the cover. The cover shown on the product page at the time of writing is of a ship. However, my copy is still the 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics) with an introduction by Julian Huxley.

Darwin, with intro by Huxley - is the REAL BOOK... BEWARE the copy with intro by Comfort

The original book by Charles Darwin is a classic that should be on everyone's reading list. There are ample reviews here which address it, praise it, and I am completely in agreement with them. Darwin's Origin of Species is a true masterpiece.

Unfortunately, this review is to help readers/buyers realize that there is a 'vandalized' version which has been published, and to tell you how to avoid it and get the real thing.

To explain; there is yet another edition also called "The Origin of Species, 150th Anniversary Edition", put out by Christian Fundamentalist Ray Comfort in an attempt to discredit evolutionary theory and Charles Darwin, and it has some extra 50 pages of unintelligible drivel about creationism, as well as having ABRIDGED Darwin's original text. If you want to read about creationism, find another book... if you want the facts, read ALL of what Darwin has to say, and please don't give any money to Comfort by accidentally buying his ABRIDGED version.

Note that he used the EXACT same name as the 'real' anniversary edition -- "The Origin Of Species: 150th Anniversary Edition by Charles Darwin". You can easily tell which version you're getting by who wrote the introduction - go with Julian Huxley, NOT Ray Comfort, and you'll have the correct and complete version.

Also, note that Amazon reviews are mixed between the books (normally not a problem at all) - I hope they are straightening this out, but currently that's not the case. Sadly, the negative reviews of the Comfort version are bringing down the rating of the 'good/real' book.

Sorry to have to write about the 'drama', but I'm sure you want to know that you have ordered the correct book, and I know you'll love it.

About the Author
Bob Farr is director of congregational excellence in the Missouri Conference of The United Methodist Church. Doug Anderson is executive director of the Rueben Job Center for Leadership Development at Dakota Wesleyan University. Following several successful pastorates in the North Indiana Conference, he has consulted churches and led workshops for 20 years, and is well known throughout the North Central Jurisdiction. Good, but not quite great

Amazingly clear thought processes and writing. This book can be used by any church group to get people thinking outside of the traditional "Churchy" ways of doing business. It argues in a compelling way for building relationships outside of our comfort zones and outside of our congregations if we hope to survive.

My only struggle is that it occasionally stoops to the numbers game as justification for reaching out to those outside of the church. "We need more people, so that is why we need to do this." I would argue that we need to meet people where they are because Jesus did not wait in the Temple or Synagogue for people to come to him but went to where the "sinners" of his day hung out. His followers must do the same to follow faithfully.

Another Great Book

This is a great look at how to INTENTIONALLY be about the business of Evangelism. If every church would ask the most important question this book asks. "What is out Strategy to connect un-connected people to Christ. Really nothing all that new here but presented in a great and fresh way. I dare every UMC to study this book together and then change.

Faith holds up a photo of the boarded-up, vacant house: "It’s the first thing I see. And I just call it ‘the Homeless House’ ‘cause it’s the house that nobody fixes up." Faith is one of fourteen women living on Syracuse’s Southside, a predominantly African-American and low-income area, who took photographs of their environment and displayed their images to facilitate dialogues about how they viewed their community. A Place We Call Home chronicles this photography project and bears witness not only to the environmental injustice experienced by these women but also to the ways in which they maintain dignity and restore order in a community where they have traditionally had little control.

To understand the present plight of these women, one must understand the historical and political context in which certain urban neighborhoods were formed: Black migration, urban renewal, white flight, capital expansion, and then bust. Ducre demonstrates how such political and economic forces created a landscape of abandoned housing within the Southside community. She spotlights the impact of this blight upon the female residents who survive in this crucible of neglect. A Place We Call Home is the first case study of the intersection of Black feminism and environmental justice, and it is also the first book-length presentation using Photovoice methodology, an innovative research and empowerment strategy that assesses community needs by utilizing photographic images taken by individuals. The individuals have historically lacked power and status in formal planning processes. Through a cogent combination of words and images, this book illuminates how these women manage their daily survival in degraded environments, the tools that they deploy to do so, and how they act as agents of change to transform their communities.

About the Author
K. Animashaun Ducre is assistant professor in the Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University. Ducre and her colleague Linda Carty were awarded a grant from the Ford Foundation to expand the curriculum around themes of gender and environmental justice. A committed advocate for environmental justice for over a decade, she worked as a toxics campaigner for Greenpeace for four years.

Vargas, a longtime corporate and community consultant, approaches social activism with high ideals, a positive viewpoint and, most helpfully, a practical and gratifying plan of action, based in his personal experience and cultural heritage. The "Familia Approach" treats activism not as a solo enterprise but as "a way of living so as to teach love and activate the positive power of our families and communities." Vargas unpacks the Mexican idea of familia and finds enfolded within its notion of the extended family-"everyone you care for and who cares for you"-the American passion for social activism. Each chapter expands on this idea, including reflection questions and bullet-point "practices," with much insight into Vargas's own family and Latino culture in general (both modern and ancient). Though not religious, Vargas is "spiritual," and does consider prayer and indigenous religious practices (like unity circles) important and powerful. Equally important, however, is real human understanding, for which he introduces the surprisingly complex concept of conocimento-conversation meant to deepen participants' knowledge of each other. Vargas's text, full of new agisms like "transformation," "energy" and "synergy," will strike some readers as redundant, but those ready to share in Vargas's passion will find much to learn.

A must read for creating a heathly and engaged family

Have you ever struggled to find a way to make family gatherings meaningful, nurturing and inspiring? Read this book and you will struggle no longer!!!

Family Activism is perhaps one of the best books I have ever read that provides strategies, tool and proven methodolgies for creating healthy and engaged families. The power of the talking stick is one wonderful tool for creating powerful and authentic conversations for birthday celebrations, weddings, baptisms, graduations and other venues where you bring family members togethers in a meaningful and inspiring way.

I also enjoyed learning more about how the process for creating great families can be used in the corporate and public sectors. I was inspired to learn how Dr. Vargas has taken these tools to many corporate environments and has introduced a mechanism to help leaders engage their teams in powerful ways. Dr. Vargas also shared how the tools of family activism can generate authentic, honest and real sharing which leads to greater familiarity, trust, unity and eventually greater results.

I believe this is a must read for anyone interested in investing in a nurturing family, a great community and engaging great teams. What a treasure and again a must read if we are to create a better world, beginning with family and friends!

As an activist, my passion is to improve the quality of life for our communities and strengthen our diverse democracy. This requires a lifetime of work and one needs a strong support structure to face new challenges each day. This book's premise is that positive social change also begins with one's family and close relationships. Creating a healthy family circle enriches ourselves and further propels us to live out our purpose. The author provides simple tools and perspectives that if implemented, can create safe family dialogues that validate our different opinions and honor each other. I can see myself using some of these tools, such as establishing a family council with my mom, uncle and grandfather. I will also buy my good friend, who is a new dad in Oakland, a copy for his new family.

Beginning with a detailed analysis of Piers Plowman, this book traces the continued vivacity of combative satirical personae and self-fashionings that took place in an appropriative movement centred on the figure of the medieval labourer. The remarkable era of Protestant 'plowman polemics' has too often been dismissed as conventional or ephemeral writing too stylistically separate to be linked to Piers Plowman, or held under the purview of historians who have viewed such texts as sources of theological or documentary information, rather than as vital literary-cultural works in their own right.

Radical Pastoral, 1381-1594 makes a vigorous case for the existence of a highly politicised tradition of 'polemical pastoral' which stretched across the whole of the sixteenth century, a tradition that has been largely marginalised by both medievalists and early modernists.

Joy Does Not Depend on Circumstances

Broken Road to Joy, what the Psalms teach us of happiness is an e-book short excerpted from "Deeper Places" by Matthew Jacoby.

Jacoby speaks of how we search for joy in materialism through the influence of media. He compares materialism to superstition. We think that getting something will make us happy, because we are happy for a while when we get something new.

However, "The immediate pleasures of a new circumstance or object may disguise the emptiness, but it will not take it away."

The authors of the Psalms, he says, show us that joy can come before we get what we petition God for, or even if we don't get what we want at all.

One quote I especially liked is, "Discontentment in our affluent world is not caused by lack but by comparison."

He gives examples from his own life and has excerpts from some of the Psalms. It is a short read but has five chapters. It would be a good book for a five-week small group or your own personal short study.

"Broken Road to Joy, what the Psalms teach us of happiness" is a powerful book. What the author does is help us to recognize what God intends, fulfilment in relationships, and what our sin has led us to seek in place of that: fulfilment in objects. In fact, in that we were created in the image of God, we were created for true happiness. We see this throughout the Psalms. The key is to see happiness and joy I the right place.
In Chapter 3, he shows how there is joy in being broken and saddened.
He shares how we must learn to cultivate desire, the right desires. Desire was meant for relationships. I appreciate his quote: "To sustain relationships, desire must have the quality of never being satisfied with having achieved an objective. This is how it should be, because relationships are not objectives and people are not objects.
The first and most important relationship is that with God, then with others.
He points out that we often see people as objects, in which we seek our happiness. This is diametrically opposed to God's plan for us, and will never bring true fulfilment, ie happiness.
In Chapter 4 he shares that our lives are, in a real sense, controlled by our desires. We will always pursue and act according to what we desire the most in any moment. He shows us that the way to fight wrong desires is to cultive right desires. This chapter is extremely helpful.
This is a short, but very powerful book. It is not a "how to" book, but, much more helpful than that, it is a book to help us compare our thinking with God's truth.
It has greatly impacted me personally, and as a pastor, I want to teach these truths to others, for they are indeed liberating.
I definitely recommend this book.

Taking You Deeper In Love

This is a slow read for me as I often stop and think on what is written on the pages, but definitely an over the top selection. Matthew's writing grabs my spirit and draws me closer and closer to the God Who is LOVE. This book calls me to a relationship with the Creator that asks me to magnify God above all others. To see Him and love Him for Who He truly is. Truly Matthew opens the Psalter, you will not read Psalms the same after Broken Road to Joy or Deeper Places. Reading this book was so compelling I had to purchase the entire book "Deeper Places" from which this(Ebook Shorts) was taken.

Side note: we have listened to Sons of Korah on CD for years as they sing the Psalms. Matthew is a part of this Australian group. Their CD's are a 'well worth' buy.

About the Author
Andy Griffiths is the "New York Times" bestselling author of "The Day My Butt Went Psycho!", "Zombie Butts from Uranus!", and "Butt Wars! The Final Conflict", as well as "The Big Fat Cow That Goes Kapow" and "The Cat on the Mat Is Flat". In 2007, he became the first Australian author to win six children s choice awards in one year for "Just Shocking!" He is passionate about inspiring a love of books in his young readers, and works as an ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Project, which provides books and literacy resources to remote indigenous communities around Australia. Modern Dr. Suess
By One more reason to love Scaredy Squirrel.
As a teacher of struggling readers,this book has been a big hit. It looks and feels like a bigger chapter book, but is fun and easy to read. The students really enjoy it and are willing to read it over and over again, which is just what they need. The illustrations are simple and funny. Even my third graders and other fluent readers have fun with the rhymes and silly stories.

FINALLY my 7 year old wants to read!

I saw this in the store and thought my son *might* be interested in this wacky book. I brought it home and read him a few pages and asked him to take it from there. He didn't want to because he NEVER wants to read. I told him that was fine but I wasn't going to read it to him and that he had to do it himself if he wanted to see what happens next. He waited until he knew I was serious and then he dug in. He absolutely never reads out loud without complaining and it was amazing to watch. He started very slowly and gained confidence and speed as he realized this was a big looking book but HE could read it without help. It was so good for his confidence that he wanted to read it to his sister once he finished the book. I had to go right out and buy the next in the series right away. He even sat down and started drawing and writing his own book inspired by this one. I can't say enough about this book!!

The Cat in the Hat is Flat

I ordered this book for my daughter who is in 3rd grade. She is a struggling reader and it is hard to find books that she can read easily that actually hold her interest. She is also starting to get self-concious about how a book "looks" - wants it to be a "chapter book" but can't always read them. She loved this book and read it straight through the first night she got it. It took her about 40 minutes, which is twice as long as she normally reads, and she didn't stop every 5 minutes to ask me how much longer she had to read for! She told me she wants to read it again which is also something I have a hard time getting her to do and even asked me to order more of the series. Thank you Andy Griffiths!
