Though at first it's like just another story of a lovelorn 20-something frozen in depressive, media-saturated ennui, Hornschemeier's simple, sad but gorgeous novel about a girl, Amy, whose life is spiraling down into morose singledom, gets right what so many tales of this kind never do. Drawn with the kind of illustrative simplicity that makes Adrian Tomine's work so addictive—the faces and backgrounds are glassy and blank at first, but in fact draw the reader deeper in—Amy's story follows a downward arc. Working a dead-end retail job and having just broken up with the last in a series of uninspiring boyfriends, Amy loses herself in angry, self-lacerating interior monologues and reruns of a surreal cartoon, Mr. Dangerous. Her devotion to her cat and morose, divorced mother loom as forecasts of a future she hates to contemplate. In between rejecting any friendly co-worker or potential date who gets anywhere close to her, Amy agonizes over her life's sole saving grace: long-distance conversations with her friend Michael, who moved out to San Francisco and appears to be the only person who gets her. The conclusion comes down to a will-they-or-won't-they scenario that could easily be trite, but Hornschemeier handles it perfectly. (May)

Mr. Hornschemeier is a wonderful artist. He has the rare ability to bring together poignant meditations across word and image to create a mood that is wholly his own, and yet very identifiable to anyone who resides a bit adrift of the world. His is a storytelling you don't want to miss.

Made me want to crawl in a box... in a good way.

I met Paul at the AppleSeed Con in Fort Wayne over this past weekend. We talked a bit about his writing and life and I bought this book. The art is what drew me to his table but the words and story will stay with me. It's one of those books that I plan on keeping.

At times this book, which went by way too fast, made me want to crawl in a box and close the lid. It had me feeling so tight for Amy, the lead, that I also wanted to turn into the barrette which held her hair back just so I could see from her view what her life is like. Such a great read, that it mostly left me wanting more.

Paul, kudos on a fantastic novel and I can't wait to pick up more of your work.

Well-executed, but it's been done before.

Hirnschemeier's art is fantastic. His ability to zero in on very specific emotions is also impressive, i.e. the combative conversations between Amy and her mother, and the narratives that play in Amy's head during her attempts at dating. The overall picture, however, is just too derivative of other stories and artists, most obviously Daniel Clowes. This is my first look at Hornschemeier, so I will give him another chance. As far as "Mr. Dangerous" goes, though, I've seen it before.

A Clear and Thorough Guide to Principles of Design for Use in Motion Graphics

Motion Graphics programs such as Flash and After Effects have become very advanced, and it's possible to create highly sophisticated, professional quality graphics and animation on a basic consumer laptop. What keeps much of it from looking very professional, though, is that most amateur users are winging it, going with what looks decent enough but tends to be cluttered or busy or lacking in unity or overall coherence. What Angie Taylor does in this richly illustrated and clear guide is introduce and apply basic principles of design to bring a consistent and coherent look to projects using programs such as After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and Flash. I learned a lot from it, and expect to consult this on a regular basis.

There's a bit of a punk sensibility to Angie Taylor's own work, and it shows in many of the examples she uses, but the principles she teaches are mostly adaptations from timeless rules that you'd find treated similarly in many art and design books. It's a very helpful approach, and while I've been exposed to many of the general ideas already, I'm far from internalizing most of them, and found this to be a very helpful refresher book. Even more helpful is the way that she takes theoretical principles of design and shows how they can be adapted for use with motion graphics programs. The chapter on color, especially, helped clarify things to me I'd seen or heard before but never quite understood, such as color theory and the relation between color spaces and the overall color spectrum.

The book covers a wide range of design issues, such as planning and thinking about composition, principles of animation and editing, typography, color, and managing the business side of motion graphics design. The author balances a spunky enthusiasm with the need for clarity; and there's a nice balance here as well between theory and practice, or principles and illustration. Each chapter includes a few insights from successful professionals whose work reflects an attention to the issues of that chapter. It's a very worthwhile guide, that would benefit both beginners and professionals who want to brush up on basic principles they may have missed. I think it would make a useful textbook for a design class, where the instructor would need to develop exercises to complement each chapter. That's really the only thing missing - the author has an encouraging and warm tone, but doesn't offer much in the way of "where to go from here and put these ideas into practice" for the beginner who may not have projects underway where these ideas could be implemented.

What a Tremendous Resource!

This book accomplishes exactly what Angie Taylor says she wants to achieve in the introduction, and then some. I've checked out books at my library on graphic design before, but many of them focus so much on the software side of design and they're full of techie stuff. Now, don't get me wrong, this book is very textbook in style, but the principles are not based on techie software. They are based on getting back to the real elements of design.

I love that Taylor begins the book with lessons on drawing. I think it's her approach with beginning at the beginning that too many media artists miss. She's clear that it begins with shape, form, color, light. This book is fabulous for college students who need to grasp the core principles of design before they begin clicking with a mouse. And Taylor sure delivers!

But the book is also great as a reference for people like me who do a little of this and a little of that. I draw, I paint, I play with Photoshop and experiment with green screen video for fun. With a reference book like this, the hobby media artist will find a priceless resource. Where I might have to invest heaps of cash in a class, this book offers a college course in core design for less than $30. She even has a chapter on fonts, which applies to so many aspects of design, even that outside of motion media.

Taylor was wise in creating a visually stunning book that cross markets to college students and the hobby artist. Sure, there are chapters that go over my head, but that's okay. If it weren't so, it wouldn't make a very good college textbook.

just the basics, covered in a basic way

I'm a video production guy, who's truly never studied graphic design (which, by the way, is what this book is about. No real emphasis on motion graphics, despite the title.) So I wanted a book that covered the basics, and that's what this book does.

However, I was still largely disappointed. I couldn't help but feel that I already knew much of this information already and the author's presentation of if felt as though she had little more then a basic understanding as well. She several time admits that one topic or another is not an area of her expertise (video editing for example, strange in a book title for the Motion Media Artist.) This feeling was not helped by the fact that this is one of those books on design where the authors personal design examples are, frankly, not that great.

This book is also structured so that you are told what your going to learn, you learn it, and then recap what you just learned two pages ago. Also, many chapters end with and "inspirational" story from an artist. This all feels like fluff to me.

Bottom line, if you want just the basics, explained in a truly basic way, this book does that. But if you want any thing more then that, then this book spends too much time on basic subject and too little time on anything advanced.

About the Author
Eric Selbin is Professor and Chair of Political Science at Southwestern University and a University Scholar.  His books include Modern Latin American Revolutions and Understanding Revolutions (with John Foran and Jack Goldstone).  He is currently completing Doing International Relations from the Margins with Meghana Nayak. In 2007 he was selected as one of Southwestern's all-time 'Fav Five' Faculty and received an Exemplary Teaching Award in 2001-2002.

In mainstream analysis, most of the revolutions are seen through the elite that eventually came to power; in this book, a wider perspective is applied. Phunny Filosophy

A funny, intelligent, warm book about philosophy, publishing and academics! Who knew it was possible? Digby Maxwell, a washed -up pop purveyor of "the next big thing" for The Village Voice and New York Magazine finds himself a gig as the new editor of a second-rate philosophy journal at a third-tier (at best) liberal arts collage in Vermont. Everything is not, of course as it seems. As Digby negotiates his new environment, he simultaneously must deal with campus politics, personal relationships, and an estranged daughter. This novel is well-written and entertaining, although it runs out of steam and the ending is not as satisfying as the rest of the book. Nevertheless, I recommend it.

So-So Philosophical Farce (Review by Ryan Mease)

This novel has a few light chuckles but will struggle to find a large audience. It relies on the idea that you're already somewhat disaffected with humanities academia, or at least willing to laugh a false-philosopher for 200 pages. The main character's development is poor, but he actual presentation is quirky. This is a farce; none of the characters are sympathetic. You could do worse than read this book, but it's not a life-changing experience. For intellectually satisfying humor, I'd try someone like David Sedaris or Sarah Vowell. -Ryan Mease

Immortality, philosophy and pop culture in a perfect blend

What happens to the predictor of trends when predictions become out of date before the papers go to press? What happens to immortality when time moves too fast? And what happens when a modern upstart takes over a stodgy university journal of philosophy?

Digby ponders whether finding a job with an Independent Philosophy Magazine might be the perfect solution to his financial woes, though "What exactly would a dependent philosophy magazine consist of?" he muses. Still, it's a job, and Digby needs a job. It even holds out the possibility of redeeming his career, reviving his immortal fame, and giving him a place to live while he, perhaps, redefines who is living his life.

Of course, the place Dibgy moves to abounds with rumors and questions. Why did he get the job instead of someone more qualified? What curious revelation did the magazine's owner have just before he died? And who's trying to get their hands on Hastings Towers? Not to mention, why?

Well-drawn, nicely analytical backstory threads into the narrative while the reader stays firmly entrenched in Digby's head--at least as much Digby himself stays in his head. Fascinating snippets of philosophy pop up, mixed with pop culture references and vivid satire, all blended like an ideal "toke" and smoked to perfection. While Nietzsche may declare "There are no facts, only interpretations," Digby's interpretations draw closer to fact as the story progesses, and the mystery to resolution, though, of course, as time moves on the answers might not matter as much as they seemed. Meanwhile there's a magazine to put out, and dead owners might seek immortality in its pages.

Events move forward to a delicious denouement, immortality retreats in face of identity, and Digby, just maybe, finally works out who he and everyone else is. Or maybe not. The perfect epilogue ties it all together, but please resist the urge to read it first.

One of the best leadership books I've read!

The author does an excellent job illustrating the great example of leadership that Christ exemplified. He is the master teacher and this book provides true practical lessons anyone can apply in a leadership environment. I have referred to it's concepts many times since reading it and have recommended it to others.

Not just a book on Leadership

I love the way that this book relates the Bible to practical lessons in everyday life. I can see myself referring back to and using what I have learned in a multitude of ways and plan to give this book as a gift.

Not the greatest book I read in 2015

This book was written by a business professor and consultant who strive to write on leadership wisdom that Jesus gave and the author specifically states that he did not want to write this book with any overt religious push of religion or theology. Honestly, the more I grow in theology the more I find books that endeavor such an attempt ends up shortchanging the readers and eventually does not do justice to the person of Jesus. This book is a case in point. Don’t get me wrong, I think one can find principles that Jesus taught on that has implication for wise leadership. The problem is that often when people try to be “neutral” and not push a certain theological conviction…they still import a certain theological presuppositions that is foreign to the teaching of Jesus or the greater whole of Scripture. For instance, in a chapter titled “Cleanse Your Insides,” the author Charles Manz talk about the importance for his readers to clean themselves on the inside but there is no mention of how Jesus wants us to be cleanse from the inside out. There is no Gospel that is central to Jesus’ life, ministry and teaching…and instead it’s a therapeutic moral theism of works righteousness that is inconsistent with Jesus’ teaching such as in Luke about justification by faith. Justification by faith is the foundation before there can be a believers’ sanctification. In another chapter titled “Stop Worrying,” Manz also gave an advice to his readers about allocating one’s worrying to a specific time during the day for about say thirty minutes. This Manz believes helps us from worrying less. However, it is ironic that he advocates this in a chapter titled “Stop Worrying.” Moreover, this is not consistent with the teaching of Jesus about how to deal with anxiety in Matthew 6 that he “fortune cookied” verses out of context. A full reading of Matthew 6 reveals that Jesus’ help for a listener who is struggling with worry is to understand the character of God. This is of course explicitly theological and Manz’ inability to go there seriously does a disservice to his readers. Furthermore, the Bible prohibits worrying and anxiety; thus it is a sin. For Manz to advocate sinning for thirty minutes a day in order to sin less is not a biblical or godly principle for godliness, let alone adequate to stop worrying. Its instances like these that I believe I cannot recommend this book since it does more damage than any good from the author’s common grace insight into the leadership example and teachings by Jesus. Readers best profit reading other more sound men of God teaching on Jesus’ leadership.
