The central aim of this interdisciplinary book is to make visible the intentionality behind the 'forgetting' of European women's contributions during the period between the two world wars in the context of politics, culture and society. It also seeks to record and analyse women's agency in the construction and reconstruction of Europe and its nation states after the First World War, and thus to articulate ways in which the writing of women's history necessarily entails the rewriting of everyone's history.
By showing that the erasure of women's texts from literary and cultural history was not accidental but was ideologically motivated, the essays explicitly and implicitly contribute to debates surrounding canon formation. Other important topics are women's political activism during the period, antifascism, the contributions made by female journalists, the politics of literary production, genre, women's relationship with and contributions to the avant-garde, women's professional lives, and women's involvement in voluntary associations. In bringing together the work of scholars whose fields of expertise are diverse but whose interests converge on the inter-war period, the volume invites readers to make connections and comparisons across the whole spectrum of women's political, social, and cultural activities throughout Europe.

Review
`Most of the varied but carefully edited papers are original and scholarly, and all are inspired by the desire to rescue from history's condescension women from the inter-war period little known todayâ ¦ the collection is a stimulus to more research, with plenty to enjoy in the individual chapters, full of rich references across many languages.' Modern and Contemporary France`The 2002 conference from which the volume arose was a stimulating and lively forum, and this is reflected in the volume which has much to recommend it: strong scholarship, an excellent introduction raising the key questions and aims that inform the enquiry, and a useful insight into the variety of activities undertaken by women in a number of European countries. The editors' hope, that the volume would illustrate and elucidate 'something of the story of women between the wars in Europe', was certainly not misplaced.' Modern Language Review`Reading this volume, one is reminded of women's contributions to their social, political, economic and cultural environment, and to the debt 1960s and 70s feminism owes to its precursors.' Journal of European Studies'This book fills a gap in our knowledge of some European women political essayists, novelists, artists and a French film maker during the twenty years between two World Wars. [â ¦] Women in Europe between the Wars is to be commended for its interrogation of the status quo on women's issues writing and for its stated intention to provide the reader with practical illustrations rather than theoretical perspectives of women's engagement as writers and as artists with this vitally important period of history.'
