Another Dead End Hit
By Eecie
Board Stiff is the latest in the Dead-End Job mystery series featuring Helen Hawthorne and another hit by Elaine Viets. Viets never fails to deliver and Board Stiff has it all; sex, lies and videotape. Set on a South Florida beach, Helen and her husband, Phil, have to pull everything together to save their client's business. They are abetted by cohorts Margery Flax and Valerie Cannata, who always add color to the story -- and in Margery's case, the color is always purple. We loyal readers have traveled a long way with Helen and it's great watching her character develop, but if you've never read this series, you'll have no problem, but you'll probably become so hooked on Helen you'll want to go back and see how she has grown. Either way, Board Stiff is a fast-paced, well-developed fun read. Add to the ambience and read it on the beach! And if you are in South Florida, don't miss Lester's Diner -- it is as yummy as Helen says.

Thank Goodness That Subplot Is Over
By Beth D
Helen and her husband Phil Sagemont have a new job for their PI services, find out who's trying to sabotage Sunny Jim's Stand Up Paddleboard Rental.
Phil is working for him and Helen is acting as a vacationing beach goer when suddenly one of Jim's customers paddles too close to the pier and drowns (so it appears). But an autopsy proves it to be murder.
Now Helen and Phil are working to find out who killed the customer, their obnoxious spouse, someone who was trying to ruin Jim, or someone else.
When a witness is killed, they have to work faster before Sunny Jim's loses everything.

Highlights:
This story is very solid and I enjoyed it a lot. For this part of the book I give it a 4 star rating.
*
Lowlights:
The blackmailing subplot that has been dragging out for the last several books gets zero stars, which brings the overall score down.

I am so glad that subplot is over, but I can't stand how it ended, and it really makes me angry.
Rob cheated on Helen, there was never any indication that he abused her during their marriage - simply cheated on her. The fact that he got so much in the divorce didn't have anything to do with him, but the judge. Would everyone had been so upset if the roles had been reversed and Helen had been a stay at home wife and got a big settlement? She let him become a house husband.
I didn't like the fact that she allowed him to marry the Black Widow without telling him that all her previous husbands had died mysteriously.
I didn't have a problem with Helen's nephew hitting him with the bat, but then Helen and her sister buried a man alive, if he hadn't woke up, they would have been murderers. Plus it was obvious that he had suffered some type of permanent disability from what had happened to him.
They're lucky he was only blackmailing them, he could have gone to the police and both of them would have been in jail, he would have sued them and got more than the $60,000, probably everything they both owned.
A lot of the reviews are calling Phil a jerk. I think he's fool for going back with her. She withheld information about felonies that she committed from him, how can he ever trust her?
I found their who cares attitude about Rob's death, horrifying.
I think I take these books too seriously some times, but when you're reading a long series, you get invested in the characters and it's so disappointing when I think they're acting out of character just to further a storyline. (Which is why I think they started having Rob get abusive towards Helen, when he hadn't before - to make it seem ok to get him killed).

Love this series!

Fabulous mystery!
Wish we could have more than one a year!
Elaine Viets is one of my favorite writers.
Helen Hawthorne actually develops and her life
change in this series. I wish Stephanie Plum
was more developed in Janet Evanovich series!
