The International Criminal Court has run into serious problems with its first big case - the situation in northern Uganda. There is no doubt that appalling crimes have occurred here. Joseph Kony‘s Lord‘s Resistance Army have abducted thousands, many of them children, and have systematically tortured, raped, maimed and killed their victims. Nevertheless, the ICC has confronted outright hostility from a wide range of groups, including traditional leaders, representatives of the Catholic and Anglican Churches, and non-governmental organizations. Even the Ugandan government, which invited the ICC to become involved in 2003, has been expressing serious reservations. For many, the Court is spoiling the peace process and is making continued warfare and suffering more likely. This book argues that much of the antipathy to the ICC is based upon ignorance and misconception. Drawing on field research in Uganda, it shows that victims are much more interested in punitive international justice than has been suggested, and that the ICC has made resolution of the war more likely.

Review
'..an excellent book on the northern Uganda conflict...' Carlos Rodriguez, Ugandan Observer '...excellent and very up-to-date book...Tim Allen's book is really valuable. It contains a wealth of background material, and firsthand interview material gathered in northern Uganda, on the issue of the interaction between the ICC and the situation [in Uganda].' Helena Cobban, 'Just World News' 'For those engaged in efforts to improve the lives of people in the north, this book is an informative read. For those who are engaged in the punditry business, it is an imperative...[Allen] brings out all of the issues and engages in a detailed analysis of the diverse views on justice and reconciliation especially for and among the Acholi people with particular reference to the ICC.' The Sunday Vision (Uganda)

Thoughtful look into an often overlooked situation...
By Stephanie M. Harris
Trial Justice turned out to be a stimulating and informative read. Allen gives a thorough background on the situation in Northern Uganda and how this crisis has unfolded into its current state; not one part of the story is left untouched. A great book for anyone wishing to explore what international justice means to the world or to learn more about the LRA. Insightful and thought-provoking, I highly recommend Trial Justice as a means of reaching a better understanding of this important, historical event.

Beyond Kony 2012
By Chimonsho
Thanks to "Kony 2012" the Lord's Resistance Army is suddenly and firmly in the public eye, but grasp of the issues may be limited, even simplistic. This work restores complexity to northern Uganda (and nearby countries where LRA operates), clarifying the historical, ethnographic and international contexts. It highlights a major tragedy of an intractable crisis: the requirements of justice can conflict with reconciliation processes, especially where there is overlap between perpetrators and victims of atrocities. Allen also notes the irony, even hypocrisy, of powerful states pursuing international "justice" only against political enemies or weak offenders. Replete with detail and theories of justice, "TJ" is sometimes dense but valuable for understanding both the LRA and other cases involving war crimes and human rights violations.
