A Special-Interest Biography On The Role Of Love In The Life Of F.Scott Fitzgerald

This biography focuses on the role of love in the personal and working life of F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is one of only three biographies of Fitzgerald recommended by The F. Scott Fitzgerald Society. It is a paperback book published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2012 and is 262 pages long. Scott Donaldson is a fine writer who researches well and leaves no stone unturned as a biographer. The book reveals the young adult Fitzgerald as someone obsessed with scouting out the daughters of wealthy parents, sorting them for quality and becoming obsessed with what he chose as the number one girl in the lot, one suitable for him to pursue and likely to win because of his intelligence and good looks. Although well written, the end result is not complimentary toward Fitzgerald, leaving him seem loaded with causes for anxiety (like worries about the shape of his feet), driven by his love for women and money and short on life experience outside of partygoing and drinking alcohol.

Excellent Insight

The first book I have ever read (and I've read them all) about Fitzgerald which didn't try to romanticise him and his relationships as if with a wistfulness that the author hadn't been there. Neither did it belittle him, as a man or as a writer. Instead, it seemed to achieve one of the most difficult of all things-trying to see another person objectively, while also trying to understand them as they saw themselves-which, after all, is a part of everyone's identity.
It put into words so many things I have dimly felt when reading other works about Fitzgerald, but could hardly recognise much less articulate. Above all, his last years in Hollywood, when at the age of almost forty, he was finally understanding that everyone must either grow up and grow old, or else die, and he had too much left to say, a second wind of his talent, to really want to die. He was finally understanding that he himself didn't have to be this tragic romantic figure in order to draw upon his gift, that it would still be there.
I'm still not saying it as well as the book does, read the book, it's the most adult, understanding yet objective biography of Fitzgerald I've read. It actually makes it more tragic that he died so young, because now I can only speculate as to what new things he would have had to say in his own new understanding, and how he would have said them. We'll never know-we have all the "Jazz Age" writings, and they were good, to say the least, but we'll never know what he might have given us from the perspective of a new age, the war and post-war, a grown daughter with a different youth and the more earnest era. And a better understanding of himself, with both feet on the ground.

Interesting reading but only OK biography

My problem with this book is that I wanted to read, first of all, a biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and only secondly a critical evaluation of his psyche and neuroses. The review of this book that I read recently in the University of Minnesota Alumni magazine was titled "A Fool for Princeton" which caught my attention. I already knew that he was an alcoholic, but I did not need to get hit over the head with that fact chapter after chapter. It was interesting to see how much of himself and his personal experiences seeped into his novels, but that is not all that unusual. I had hoped for more of a chronology of his life, which the author seems to assume everyone already knows, and more about his short stories, which I always thought revealed a very vivid imagination.
